About the GST Calculator

GST arithmetic trips people up in one direction far more than the other. Adding tax to a base amount is easy. Working backwards from a tax-inclusive total to find the base and the tax portion is where the mistakes happen, because the intuitive move of subtracting 18% from an inclusive figure gives the wrong answer. This calculator handles both directions correctly.

Enter an amount, choose the applicable slab of 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%, and pick whether you are adding GST to a base figure or removing it from an inclusive total. You get the base amount, the tax and the final total, along with the CGST and SGST split that an invoice for an intra-state supply has to show.

That split is worth understanding. For a sale within a single state, GST divides evenly into a central half and a state half, so an 18% rate appears on the invoice as 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. For a sale across state lines it is instead charged as IGST at the full rate. The calculator shows the intra-state breakdown, which is the one most small businesses need daily. Results are for general guidance, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove GST from a total amount?
Choose the reverse option and enter the GST-inclusive total. The calculator returns the base amount and the tax portion separately.
What are the GST slabs in India?
The main rates are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, with the applicable slab depending on the goods or service.
What is the difference between CGST and SGST?
For sales within a state, GST splits evenly into central (CGST) and state (SGST) halves. Interstate sales use IGST at the full rate instead.
