About the Age Calculator

Working out an exact age is more fiddly than it looks. Months have different lengths, leap years move the goalposts, and the mental arithmetic goes wrong precisely when it matters, on a visa application, a pension form, an insurance quote or a school enrolment. This calculator does it properly: enter a date of birth and get the age in years, months and days, plus the total number of days lived.

The method matches the one used on official forms. Complete years are counted first, then the remaining whole months, then the leftover days, so the answer agrees with what an administrator would arrive at rather than a decimal approximation of it. Leap days are handled correctly, including for people born on 29 February, whose age advances on schedule in common years.

You can also change the target date to something other than today, which answers the questions people usually need answered: how old someone will be on a particular future date, or how old they were on a date in the past. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so the date of birth you enter is never sent anywhere.
