About the WebP to PNG
WebP is a web format, and the moment a file leaves the web it starts causing friction. Images saved from a browser arrive as .webp, and then the print shop cannot open it, the older version of Photoshop refuses it, the document template rejects it and the client asks what a WebP is. Converting to PNG makes the file universally readable again.
PNG is the right target when the image has transparency or hard edges. A logo, an icon, a screenshot, a diagram or a product cut-out all survive the round trip intact, because PNG is lossless and keeps the alpha channel exactly as WebP stored it. Nothing is re-compressed and no detail is discarded — the file gets larger, which is the price of storing every pixel exactly.
If the image is a photograph and you do not need transparency, JPG is usually the better destination: a photo as PNG can be several times the size of the same photo as JPG for no visible benefit. Use this tool for graphics, and the WebP to JPG tool for photos. Conversion happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device and there is no size or quantity limit.
Frequently asked questions
- Does converting WebP to PNG keep transparency?
- Yes. PNG supports a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas come through exactly as they were.
- Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?
- PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, while WebP compresses by discarding detail. A larger file is the cost of an exact copy.
- Should I convert photos to PNG or JPG?
- JPG, unless you need transparency. A photograph saved as PNG is often several times larger with no visible improvement.
