About the Image Metadata Viewer
Every photo carries more than the picture. Cameras and phones write an EXIF block into the file recording the make and model, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, the exact moment the shutter fired and — if location services were on — the coordinates where you were standing. None of it is visible when you look at the image, and all of it travels with the file when you send it.
That has two very different uses. Photographers read it to learn from their own work or someone else's: knowing a shot was taken at f/1.8 and 1/2000 explains the look far better than guessing. Everyone else reads it to find out what they are about to give away. A photo posted to a forum or sent to a stranger can carry the coordinates of your home to six decimal places, and this tool shows you that before you send it rather than after.
EXIF is read from JPEGs and text chunks and eXIf blocks from PNGs, with GPS coordinates converted from the raw degrees-minutes-seconds form into decimal degrees you can paste into a map. An empty result is informative too: social networks and messaging apps strip metadata on upload, so a photo saved from one of them usually has nothing left to find. If you want it gone from your own files, the Remove Image Metadata tool strips it.
Frequently asked questions
- What is EXIF data?
- A block of information cameras write into image files: camera and lens model, exposure settings, the date and time of capture and often GPS coordinates.
- Can you see where a photo was taken?
- Only if the camera recorded it. When GPS tagging was on, this tool shows the latitude and longitude and flags it clearly at the top of the report.
- Why does my photo show no metadata?
- Something already stripped it. Social networks, messaging apps and many editors remove EXIF when a file is uploaded or exported.
