About the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Every YouTube video has its thumbnail stored at a set of predictable public addresses, in several resolutions. This tool works out those addresses from the video URL you paste and shows you every size that exists, so you can take the one you need without digging through page source or installing a browser extension that wants access to your entire browsing history.

Most videos offer maxresdefault at 1280x720, along with smaller hqdefault, mqdefault and sddefault versions. Older uploads and low-resolution videos may not have the maxres image at all, which is why the tool shows what is actually available for that specific video rather than promising a resolution it cannot deliver.

It is genuinely useful for research, competitive analysis, thumbnail design reference, and archiving your own uploads. It is worth being clear about the limits: thumbnails are the copyright of whoever owns the video. Using someone else's thumbnail as your own artwork is infringement, and no tool changes that. Reference, commentary and analysis are on much firmer ground.
